Sarasota Tree Pollens Are Here

Happy New Year Sarasota! It looks like we’re going to have an early tree pollen season in 2015 with moderate levels of pollen already in the air.
A large study recently published in The Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology looked at the prevalence of hay fever and associated climate factors using data from the 2007-2008 National Survey of Children’s Health. In total, 91,642 children and adolescents from all 50 states in the U.S were assessed.
Hay fever occurred in 18.0% of U.S. children, with the highest prevalence in southeastern and southern states. This was attributed to lower outdoor humidity, overall dryer conditions, hotter outdoor temperature and less indoor heating, higher precipitation, and higher pollen counts. This study provides the first U.S. population-based estimates of hay fever prevalence in children and suggests that climate factors may trigger or perpetuate hay fever.
If you or a loved one are suffering from allergy symptoms this Winter/Spring, it may be time to see a local allergist. Skin testing for allergens is safe and easy and helps tailor treatment options to each individual.
