The food allergy team at Windom Allergy was hard at work Saturday morning, May 13th, seeing out of town patients undergoing food oral immunotherapy or OIT. This was the last monthly Saturday clinic for the current school year.
With patients traveling from as far north as Jacksonville and south from Miami, the Saturday clinic allows the kids to avoid missing school. The weekend hours will resume in September, the 2nd Saturday of each month during the school year.
Patients undergoing OIT to ‘turn off’ their food allergy can come to the clinic from 1-4 weeks apart to receive an increased dose of the allergenic food. After 12-14 visits they reach their top dose of 1 glass of milk, 1 egg, 1 slice of wheat bread, 3-8 peanuts, or a single serving of whatever food they were allergic to. Wendy, the food allergy treatment coordinator, happily announced that everyone tolerated their increased dose on Saturday. Updose visits will continue during regular Monday thru Friday business hours.
