Back to school – With school back in session, here at Windom Allergy that means, bring on the contagious respiratory diseases. Once one child has a ‘cold’, the rest of the class is sure to follow. Kids with asthma are hit the hardest since viral infections almost always trigger asthma attacks. Throw in all the rain we’re having and the subsequent burst of mold spores, and our allergic asthma patients are in for a double whammy. At the first sign of a ‘cold’, we encourage our asthma kids to start their maintenance medication (usually an inhaled steroid) or increase the dose if they are taking one routinely. If that doesn’t get things under control we get them in for some individualized treatment.
The other ‘biggie’ with going back to school is dealing with food allergies. We are filling out school forms daily for patients to have epinephrine and Benadryl on hand for possible food reactions. Our main concern is accidental ingestion of the dreaded food, not so much skin or air contact. If the process is burdensome to you or your child and it has been years since the food allergy has been addressed, let us know because we have tools available to find out if you’ve outgrown the food allergy and ways to ‘turn it off’ if is it still present. Bon appetite!
